Have you ever wondered what it is and where it comes from? Have you thought about electricity and the environment? There are some things you can do when you use your power source that help the environment, too.

Electricity is like energy and is used by most of the world. Believe it or not, coal, also known as a fossil fuel, is used to make this type of power. Another source that brings us this power is the sun. Remember those thunder storms? The lightning that you see is a form of electricity, too. Nearly every state has its own company that distributes this power to each home. Some people have changed over to solar power and no longer pay a company for their power. This source of power also helps the environment. The wind can make power, too. Have you ever seen the big windmills when you have driven by a fenced in power plant? Generating power with the wind is becoming more popular in the world, but it is still not the number one source of power.

Have you ever bought a battery for your vehicle or for your radio? That battery generates power to the vehicle or to the radio, so the battery is a source of electricity.

In order for solar power to work, one has to have solar panels and big batteries where the power is stored. This power comes from the sun and the sun only shines for so many hours per day, so the batteries can store the power for times when the sun has gone down, or for rainy days. This is a great source of power, but it can cost thousands of dollars for this type of system to be set up. Quite a few people are turning to this source of power, though, as it will save them money in the future. There are other benefits of having solar power for electricity. There won’t be any wires going to the home or garage and other structures that require power. As mentioned earlier, solar power helps the environment.

For those of us who still use the old fashioned electricity, there are some things that we can do to help the environment. One thing that we can do has to do with computers and monitors. Computer manufacturers are making newer computers, monitors, and laptops that are energy efficient. This means that they use less power to run them. This cuts down on the usage of power that we use and helps the environment. How does it help the environment? If we use less power, it will cut down on the need for the sources that produce it and preserve the world a lot longer. By buying things that are efficient in every use, you can save a lot of money on your light bill, too. Many companies make electronics, appliances, shower heads, lamps and lights, fans, air conditioners, and many other things that use less power. So, you can save some green and you can go green, all at the same time.

While electricity has been a wonderful invention, it can also be a dangerous invention. If you ever see a wire on the ground or hanging low, do not touch it. Go and call an authority person for help. Never try to drive over a wire that is on the road. If you are ever flying a kite and your kite lands on a wire, do not try to go and get it. If you need to wire your home, add a light or light switch, or fix any other electrical thing, always shut the power off before you fix anything like that. Electricity is a wonderful thing for us, but if it is not handled in the right way, it can be deadly.
