T Boone Pickens Wind Farm

Today oil companies are among the biggest and most profitable companies in the world, some countries such as Argentina even rely on their oil revenues to fund government projects. But these days of big oil profits may be coming to an end as the world pushes for more fuel efficient and even electric cars as well as other alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power. Some oil companies are trying to prolong this time, but one billionaire oilman by the name of T. Boone Pickens is embracing the future as he spends billion of dollars on a wind farm project in Texas. The planned wind farm would be the biggest in the world and be able to provide power to an impressive 1.3 million homes.

In 2008 the United States took the lead as the number one wind energy producing country and is still growing at a rapid rate. Texas has one of the best wind corridors in the world and Pickens plans to take advantage of this with his new wind farm. The new project will put around 2,000 turbines in four counties on almost 200,000 acres of land. It could cost as much as $6 billion with a generation capacity of 2,000 to 4,000 MW of electricity. Pickens company, Mesa Power, is offering landowners a whopping $4,500 upfront and payments thereafter based on the electricity produced from those turbines. Doesn’t sound like a bad idea considering that these lands are currently empty and completely unused. Texas has recently seen a surge in growth of its wind farms as it currently has more than 30 of them either operating or under construction. The Horse Hollow Project nearby is the worlds largest at 735.5 MW. This means that Pickens project would easily become the world’s largest and make Texas one of the biggest wind energy producers in the world.

Pickens has started snatching up acres and acres of land and has placed orders for turbines from GE. An added bonus of this project taking place right now is that it will create a massive amount of much needed jobs as the country heads towards a double digit employment rate. The amount of energy created from this prospective wind farm is also equivalent to the amount of power produced from two nuclear power plants. With plans for these nuclear power plants popping up all over the country, it is important that we try to grow our other alternative energy sources so that we don’t have to create these dangerous and harmful power plants.
