Arizona electricity usage among businesses is becoming quite an important topic. Since becoming deregulated Arizona has experienced the benefits of deregulation and a few of the short term problems deregulation can produce. Among a few of these benefits is the business possessing the ability to negotiate their own power bill.
Until now, many Arizona business owners could not negotiate their own electricity bill and had to bear the burden of monopolistic regulatory rules that enforced a system designed to guarantee the utility monopolies a regular and consistent profit. Instead of encouraging competition, the regulated markets enforced a paradigm in which free market dynamics were suppressed instead of being allowed to work for the betterment of the customer.
Since regulation, Arizona energy providers are now cutting rates and competing to give customers the service that they deserve based on a model of customer choice.
The reason deregulation has been a marked success over regulation is that Arizona boasts one of the largest cities in the U.S., Phoenix. Given that Phoenix has over 1 million people in it and that most of those residents are in need of high energy resources, like air conditioning. Phoenix boasts a thriving business district and is a business hub for much of the southwestern U.S. These businesses require a lot of electricity to run everything from copiers to presses and always have to have the highest degree of service for their performance to be on target.
Anyone familiar at all with Arizona, but even Phoenix specifically is aware of the challenges of positioning a major city in the middle of a desert can pose. Given that the temperatures in Arizona frequently top 110 degrees, it is easy to picture how the demand on the local energy grid goes sky high as air conditioners kick on early in the day and do not stop until late in the evening, if at all. This is not a rare problem that a city would face this in the southwestern U.S. but nonetheless, Phoenix has its’ share of hot days. With this in mind businesses in Arizona have to keep their buildings cool to keep customers coming in the door and to do that they have to use electricity to run their air conditioners.
As deregulation starts to really bring energy costs to within reality for businesses in Arizona the entire state will benefit from the freedom of choice that regulation tends to diminish if not eliminate altogether.
