No one thinks much about Daylight Saving Time except that we get to sleep an extra hour on Sunday once a year. Most of us take it for granted. However, I have uncovered some interesting facts that will shed a little light on the subject for you.
In 2007 DST was extended by four weeks. This was to promote energy conservation. We now start 3 weeks earlier and end it one week later than years past.
The idea was conceived by none other than Ben Franklin. The main reason for this seasonal time change was to make better use of daylight. Most people refer it as Daylight Savings Time, but the correct verbiage is Daylight Saving Time. The time change saves us a significant amount of energy by trimming the use of electrical energy.
Studies show that by extending the day by an extra hour decreases the likelihood of pedestrians being killed on the road by up to four times.
Approximately 70 countries observe Daylight Saving Time throughout the world. Some countries do not make the change in March and November as we do in the United States. It is not observed in Hawaii, American Samona, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or the Eastern Time Zone of India. Arizona doesn’t do DST either except on the Navajo Indian Reservation.
So, next time you change your clock, like it or not you can thank Ben Franklin, or just move to a country or state that doesn’t observe it. Enjoy the extra hour this fall.
Russell is retired from the corporate world and is now a stay at home dad who tries to keep up with his 3 children and loving wife. When not worrying about daylight saving time, Russell has another interest of wooden doll houses.
