Eco-Hostels
Known for their independent and principled approach to traveling, backpackers have always been in step with notions of ecotourism and responsible travel.
And, thanks to a new generation of hostels which encourage sustainable travel – from organic produce to compost toilets – there’s now even more opportunity to help protect and conserve the planet’s stunning scenery and natural resources for generations of travelers to come.
Hostel Ecological Expeditions; Pantanal, Brazil
Buried deep in the Brazilian jungle, the Hostel Ecological Expeditions is a working cattle ranch where travelers can enjoy the chance to live surrounded by a genuinely unspoiled environment and wildlife.
The hostel also runs ecotours down the Rio Abrobal and into the Estrada Parque which include horse trekking, piranha fishing and researching alternative medicine.
The Algonquin Eco-Lodge; Algonquin, Canada
Located on the southern border of Algonquin Park, this remote Eco-Lodge is a wilderness lover’s dream.
On the doorstep of amazing cross-country skiing, dog sledding, hiking, canoeing and mountain biking, the building itself is also environmentally friendly. Alternative energy sources are used in every instance, from the battery-powered hot showers to the outdoor wood-fired sauna.
Cerro Chato Eco Lodge; La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Costa Rica is becoming increasingly well-known for its ecotours, and Cerro Chato is a great place from which to get involved with one of the numerous conservation and environmental programs, or simply contribute to the local community.
Set at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, the hostel has spectacular views of the surrounding scenery, as well as its own landscaped grounds full of tropical flowers and birds.
Enigmata Treehouse Ecolodge; Camiguin Island, Philippines
This unique hostel is built around an Acasia tree that overlooks the sea on the amazing Philippine island of Camiguin.
About five kilometers from the nearest town, it’s a haven for travelers in the heart of a stunning natural environment which aims to cultivate their appreciation of (and responsibility towards) the unique surroundings through artistic and cultural interest.
Ecohun; Pecs, Hungary
Situated in the tiny village of Kiskassa (which consists of just a single street), Ecohun is a small organic farm which offers a warm family welcome to travelers looking to escape the tourist crowds and busy cities of Europe.
It’s surrounded by hills, wildlife and traditional culture and all the produce here, from milk and honey to sausages, is locally sourced. Even the wine is made nearby from the vineyards at Villany.
