Truck Spill Kits - What to Keep on Hand in Case You Have a Truck Spill

Spills happen. And trucks have their fair share, especially if they transport hazardous materials. There are regulations by DOT and EPA that require you to be prepared to deal with such emergencies. Read on for ways to comply with those regulations.

The easiest way to be prepared for spill problems is to always carry spill kits. With so many portable kits available, there’s really no excuse. There are even special kits made for truckers, for example truckers’ emergency spill kits or portable truckers kits.

In fact, companies who specialize in selling absorbents and other safety equipment find that their portable truckers spill kits are by far their most popular portable ones. And if you take a look at one of them, you can see why that would be the case:

They’re very economical because you only pay for what you really want. There’s no expensive or costly container that would increase the price. Instead, it comes in a sturdy transparent poly bag and, best of all, it can be resealed — which means, you can use part of the contents and then use the rest of it later.

If you’re shopping for them, you may want to be sure to look for ones that include extras, such as safety gloves and goggles. Those are not usually included in the cheaper variety, but they can come in really handy, and will protect you and your crew, if you have one, as well as any bystanders.

Emergency kits, compact as they are already, also are available in two sizes. Get the size that seems more appropriate for your truck. You can get several and keep them in your truck, and on other vehicles, such as forklifts and cranes. You can also keep them around throughout your facility. Their use is not restricted to trucks by any means. They can come in handy for spills anywhere else as well.

And don’t worry that somebody might mistake them for something else. They’re clearly marked and they also include detailed instructions on their use.

How big a spill can you handle with the contents of a standard size kit? About 5-7 gallons. And if you’re wondering, 5-7 gallons of what, you’ll be glad to know that you can get truck spill kits in generic or universal versions, plus in oil only version, and even in a hazmat version.
